I encountered the same problem. After installing the new KDE 3.2 I couldn't connect \
to my E-Mail-Server with authentication. It worked fine with the old version of kmail \
(I'm not sure about the old version number, the one that came together with KDE 3.1)

First I tried to fix this problem my self by changing Encryption and Authentication \
Method. "Check what the Server supports" works, but after using these settings it \
didn't work eather. What happened to this new version? How can I fix this problem or \
is it a bug, that came together with 1.6? \
