The .index format is always upwards compatible so even if it changed a 
newer KMail should still be able to use the index files.

Try if it works if you copy the Mail directory instead of symlinking it. 
I don't think that this will help, but it won't hurt either. Apart from 
this I have no idea why it doesn't work for you. Is there probably a 
permission problem?
