What about simply adding a configuration option for this? 
If there are concerns about too many options and what not, I always find some 
sort of "Advanced" panel, (maybe only acessible via a button the way the 
kicker configuration module does it in it's Appearance panel), the easiest 
and most user-friendly approach. It's clear that some people would love 
automatic thread breaking, and others are strongly opposed to it (and I think 
there are good arguments on both sides), so IMHO making it configurable seems 
like the best solution in this case short of doing nothing.
