Concerning the space you can upgrade to 3.1. Then you have the possibility to collapse 
the local tree if you set your startup-folder to an imap-folder. But this feature is hidden 
(will be fully implemented in 3.2): Add an entry startupFolder to the General section of 
your kmailrc that points to the full path of your folder. E.g. my entry is 
"startupFolder=.server.directory/INBOX" where server is my account-name.
