The connection is kept alive as long an IMAP folder is selected. Otherwise it
would be necessary to reconnect for every action which would be much slower.

Collapse the IMAP account, if you want to have no connection at all that for
example checks for new folders when KMail starts.

Subject: IMAP account connects to server even if mail check disabled
From: GeorgBaumann@web.de
X-KDE-Received: -80.135.113.143

Package: kmail
Version: 1.4.1 (using KDE 3.0.0 )
Severity: normal
Installed from: Red Hat Linux 7.2.93
Compiler: gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.3 2.96-110)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.18-5
OS/Compiler notes:

When using KMail from my home office, then I want to check for new mail manually, \
because I dont want to have a phone connection all the time. Using KMail with an IMAP \
account it is possible to configure this behavior in the KMail settings. However if \
KMail is running the connection is busy all the time, if I exit KMail then the \
connection goes down. This tells me that KMail connects to the IMAP server \
periodically even if the automatic mail check is disabled.

I would suggest this is a bug.
