I tried konsole again today

    mfabian@gregory:~$ konsole --version
    Qt: 3.0.2-snapshot-20020126
    KDE: 2.93 (CVS >= 20020213)
    Konsole: 1.1 Beta2

Does this already contain your fixes Waldo? 

It appears to contain some fixes as it has improved, but there are
still problems.

    + cursor is at the correct position now behind the prompt and
      not in the middle of the line as before
    - after many Japanese characters, a box is shown
    - halfwidth kana are used
    - the current Japanese input at the cursor position is invisible,
      but after pressing space twice the 'Candidate Selection'
      window appears (as reported by meinke@pa.msu.edu above)
    - after selecting a candidate and confirming with 'Return',
      nothing is inserted into konsole.
    - the status window, indicating that Japanese input is active
      and displaying the current mode of the input is invisible
    - cutting and pasting Japanese doesn't work

    + Japanese input at cursor position visible, conversion
      region visibly marked in reverse.
    + Status window visible (below the cursor position)
    + Japanese test file and output of 'date' displayed correctly,
      no boxes, no halfwidth kana.

'konsole' is still worse than other KDE3 applications like 'kedit' for
example. In 'kedit' the display and input of Japanese works correctly,
although the status window and the current conversion region are is
invisible as well.
