I think this is a general problem of Qt3.

To quote Mike Fabian, one of my collegues:
--- Start Quote ---
To input Japanese you need:

    ~$ rpm -i canna.rpm cannadic.rpm
    ~$ rccanna start
    ~$ rpm -i kinput2.rpm
    ~$ LANG=ja_JP LC_ALL=ja_JP kinput2 -xim -kinput -canna &
    ~$ export XMODIFIERS="@im=kinput2"
    ~$ LANG=ja_JP konsole &

(or '~$ LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 konsole &')

Then follow the instructions on

    http://www.suse.de/~mfabian/suse-cjk/kinput2-canna-simple-exampl.html

I'll test whether this works now. Japanese input generally works in
KDE3, but it is quite inconvenient compared to KDE2 because of the
OnTheSpot input which is not implemented perfectly. In principle,
OnTheSpot input is best (also for Japanese) but the current
implementation in Qt3 is deficient. Compared to the current OnTheSpot
implementation in Qt3, the OverTheSpot implementation in Qt2 was
more convenient for Japanese.

The best solution would be to fix the problems with the current
OnTheSpot implementation, but that might be difficult. Second best
would be a possibility to use OverTheSpot as a fallback like it is
possible with Vim.

Maybe Lars can comment on this from a Qt point of view. KDE doesn't do
anything in this area that I'm aware of but it could of course be that we do
something that interacts poorly with kinput2 in which case we should fix
that.

Cheers,
Waldo
