But not before the user clicks Ok in the config dialog for the first time.

That is not a reason, that I have to care for all problems and most other 
people only work on new features which introduce new problems I later have to 
care fore. Anyway, as long you care for the problems in your code, this is 
already great.

Sounds like a good idea.

Then please commit your patch. This two different default colours problem 
should be fixed before though which shouldn't be too difficult.

I think, the profile manager can be temporarily broken. I anyway doubt, that 
really many people use it.
