If you can log in into your computer via telnet or ssh, you can try to start 
KMail from gdb from an external terminal and see if it gives some 
information.

On your computer type "xhost +".
On the remote computer type:
telnet <other host>
export DISPLAY=:0
gdb kmail
set args --nofork
run
<it freezes>
Ctrl-C
bt
