All else being equal, I prefer to have nested menu shortcuts on my left
hand (right hand may be on the mouse), or at least on the same hand as the
top-level menu.  W and V are both on the left on a standard QWERTY
keyboard.

I think users would be ok with the numbers.  Netscape's "Go" menu under
MSWindows, for example, has numbered hotkeys that are continually changing
based on the history.

IMO requiring users to add '&' is a little arcane.  However, it does have
the advantages you cite.  The right answer, as with all things Linux, is
probably to make the numbers optional somehow and then document the '&'
feature.  But that's a patch for another day.
