My high level directory structure is pretty fixed so I can easily create a
bash script that does several tar steps creating smaller files. I can keep
VFAT for other uses and still get the backups I need and have access to
smaller groups of data. I just tested a tar step to backup only my hidden
files (excluding the .thumbnails) and it worked like a charm. The maildir
e-mail files are all there. I can even use ARK on it if I get really lazy.
Please accept my profound thanks for all the help offered. I learned a lot in
the past 24 hours.
