Its been a problem since before kde-2.0 came out.  Yes I've been using it 
that long.  The usual fix is to offload the mail fetching to fetchmail, 
and the spamassassin duties to procmail running in the background.  Then  
the only time it lags is when its sorting the messages into the proper 
folder.  The fetchmail/procmail combination gets rid of about 95% of the 
lags.
