I too have IMAP accounts and decided to give KMail a try (I've mostly
used
Thunderbird).

Thunderbird would download the headers of each message and filter on
them. 
Are you saying that KMail can't do that? KMail can only download the
entire
message to filter on?

I've not yet set up filters in KMail and if what you say is true,  I
won't
bother.    I'll just go back to Thunderbird (which lacks the excellent
mailing list management that KMail has).
