This sounds like a problem with corrupted index files.  IIRC Mandriva 2006 
puts them in ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail.  Look for all files with 'index' 
in the name and delete them - or re-name them, to be ultra-cautious.  When 
you re-start kmail they will be re-created.
