I didn't think that was necessary (adding to trustlist.txt) if the key was 
already considered valid by Kmail (i.e., a mail sent using Thunderbird and 
signed with the key displays "Good Signature" when read by Kmail.) 

In any event, the root cert was already there (added some time ago).
