Er .. weird. As for debug output to the console, you will need to compile with 
debugging turned on. The easiest way to do that - if you've got the source - 
is to edit lib/options.h and #define DEBUG (there's a commented line for that 
already). If you have the tarballs , DEBUG should already be on (in that 
case, check with kdebugdialog that KPilot's debugging areas aren't 
suppressed).

Looking at the code, I don't see anything obviously wrong except some code 
ugliness which I'll fix tomorrow. I'll add some extra verbosity, then, too.
