I've tested it with the same version of KMail with about 4300 messages
on the server. Checking mail took about 10-15 seconds (with 100% CPU
usage). But that was on a Pentium 4 with 2.66 GHz. So on a slower
machine it could take much longer. We are using a pretty stupid
algorithm (complexity O(n)) to check whether a message has already been
downloaded. For now you should probably use fetchmail to fetch new mail
from the POP server to a local file and then fetch the mail with KMail
from the local file.
