forgive me for being blunt, but this sounds like an appeal to emotion rather
than reason.

if, as others have pointed out, most modern platforms have this feature turned
on by default, then don't you think there is a good reason for it? my guess is
that some credible studies have shown that the majority of users experience an
improvement in usability when smooth scrolling is on (and well implemented, of
course). i further surmise--call it an intuitive guess--that the improvement
is more drastic on touchscreen devices. sorry that i can't provide any
citations--i'm not the usability expert here. rather, i'm calling for someone
to take on this role--don't you think that this should be researched as a basis
for deciding which option should be the default?

the existence of a vocal minority of users who objects to one option or the
other is no reason at all for deciding in their favor. if KDE is a desktop
environment for audience X, then its defaults should match those settings that
the majority of X prefers, and it should provide complementary options for
significant minorities in X. so please, as part of this bug or as a follow-up
to it, do the appropriate research to determine defaults instead of making
arbitrary decisions based on a few people's heated objections.

of course, this is a secondary issue. poorly chosen defaults are still better
than not having the feature at all. thanks to anyone who is working on
implementing it one way or the other.
