I forgot to mention that I had installed the Gnome Desktop on Kubuntu 5.10 Breezy.

Part of the above problem was resolved by installing the Ubuntu desktop on Kubuntu  \
6.04 Dapper. This action installs the Gnome desktop, and the Networking icon can be \
applied on the panel. But I still prefer the 'Ethernet Connection' icon that allows \
better manipulation of the network.

Installing Gnome desktop is easy. Open up a terminal and type:  sudo apt-get install \
ubuntu-desktop .

Having the choice of switching from  KDE to Gnome is not only usfull but a pleasant \
change of scenery.  D. Pappas
