Kyle,

Thanks for your post but I have either misunderstood or things
aren't that simple......

How do you put KDE into locolour mode? This doesn't appear to be
an option on the control center on my system.

I have removed the hicolour directory (following the advice
below) /usr/local/kde2/share/icons and restarted and this has no
effect on the number of free colour slots.  Running my own
application to see how many private colour slots are available
under KDE returns 50 free slots with nothing running except
Konsole and the control panel.  I need at least 64 free colour
slots to work effectively.
