I also had problems like this with kppp in the past -
they could mostly be solved by playing around with options 'auth - noauth'
- anyway, I have switched to wvdial long time ago, this has always worked for 
me reliably.
I agree with andrew that kppp and wvdial do basically the same things:
-	dial the ISP
-	authenticate your id to the ISP
-	get an IP adress & set DNS server IP
-	start pppd

the difference is imho in the authentication process - whereas kppp only
uses the standard method, wvdial is capable of negotiating with the ISP 
dial-in program to figure out what authentication method is used, hence 
beeing more flexible.
btw., the standard internet dialer kinternet from suse is just a wrapper for 
wvdial, another thing to mention is that once correctly setup, you can use
wvdial also from a console window (great when a kde build from source 
breaks....)
