Sure, that can be an important concern. At least Unix "comes" with a
very powerful editor, and you are reasonably guaranteed that some
flavor of vi will be available. Plus, it's small enough that even
a minimal distribution can host it. FWIW, I learned vi that way --
had a boot/root combo of Linux plus a little 'utility' disk (I wasn't
yet committed to installing it on the HD at that time), I just
mounted the utility disk on /usr/local/bin, and there was enough 
there.

I've known some tech support people in the DOS world, and (at that
time) all you could really assume was that they had EDLIN on the
system. I remember one guy who said he had to guide a user in how
to edit a file, keystroke by keystroke, in EDLIN because that's
the only editor guaranteed to be there.

So, it pays to be proficient in the "system" editor -- and in the
case of Unix, vi is it.
