I know it's not he time out but it might be the irq settings. I ran
sndconfig
for OSS and it detects my sound card just fine. It also say the
configuration
verifys OK. How do I find out what the IRQ and DMA setting should be. I
don't
have any doc's on the sound card.

Is the card is PnP the IRQs, DMAs would be defined at boot time by the
BIOS if your BIOS suports PnP...
You must turn _OFF_ sound suport at kernel level, you must be sure that
before run X you can make sounds with
cat file.au > /dev/audio or
cat file.wav > /dev/dsp
for instance...
So OSS will do all for you! This is the why it is not free ;-) couse it
works _really_ well with all kind of systems...
