You can copy the xinitrc file to $HOME/.xinitrc and modify it there.
The proper start syntax for startkde is:
exec startkde
Find has a problem with extensions so it wouldn't find .xinitrc if it existed.
Locate could find it whether it was xinitrc, xinitrc1, .xinitrc or anything
else.
