Hi Dennis...

much of what you address in your reply is true, but has litle to do with 
seperating things into Novice/Experienced/Guru user levels... user levels 
hide/reveal capabilities and features of the system. what you mostly address 
in your email is user customization (icons, panel behaviour, etc) and general 
UI friendliness. these are deffinitely necessary things, but altering your 
icons is miles different than hiding menu options for fear that they might 
confuse the user (in which case the proper response is to rework those menus 
& options so they are clear and usable)

some things you note correctly IMO is that when features are hidden from 
users, most will not progress to using the hidden features and that, 
surprise! surprise!, people like tinkering and tweaking their system (even if 
it means doing something scary like going into their registry).
