Not really. Plasma::TabBar does not have its own "x", so an "ugly" (in this 
context) red one would be used. That does not look right with most Plasma-
Themes.

I  think this would look distracting. I don't think that most people would 
understand why this applet suddenly uses more space upon a mouse hover.

That sounds like a good idea, I was just not sure what percentage to use and 
started testing already. :)
Have to try the >200%.

No clue.
I was told that what I had before was not ideal and that I should look at the 
config of the digital clock and that's what I did.
So what specific parts are not so good here?
