One piece of evidence I'd like to throw in - my cheque book provided by a UK 
national bank. 

Relevant here because in the UK, retail bankers are price-takers - they have 
little or no ability to move us a way from free banking.  

A point I probably don't need to make is that there is (was) clearly a 
sufficient demand to increase their costs by the provision of another free 
product. 

Another point I probably don't need to make is that when I used it once to 
draw cash, the right handed teller got quite frustrated with it, finding it 
really awkward to use - probably the first time in my life I have ever 
uttered the phrase "and you point is?"
