Personnaly, I prefer the current KDE 3.4 keybindings.

I often scroll long messages, so Up/Down for Scroll is better for me, and then 
Left/right leaves for Next/Prev messages

But other people may read more short messages and then prefer to have Up/Down 
refer to the list, and keep Left/Right for seldom scrolls in messages.

So, both directions are valuable.

What about adding another button near to the "Hide This Bar" one, saying
"Invert Directions".
This would even make this bar useful, and not only informative.

No.
I don't have the time, neither the knowledges in KMail code to do so.
