I would like to suggest two improvements which should make it easier
to click system tray icons:

1. In the current implementation the clickable region that surrounds
and triggers each system tray icon begins two pixels away from the
screen edge. It should be no pixel, so that after throwing the mouse to
the screen edge next to the system tray the user only has to
aim at the icons horizontally. That way she wouldn't have to move her
mouse down again to aim. See good old Fitts's Law for the magic behind
this.
Taskbar entries and kicker applets already show this behaviour.

2. While aiming at system tray icons their clickable region should be
highlighted, so that it's alway clear which icon will receive the click
action. In the current implementation it is not at all obvious which
icon will get the click action if the user clicks between two system
tray icons.
Have a look at http://www.uni-koblenz.de/~soma/kde/systray.html for a
flash mockup.
