Googling i didn't found much things, i fear that it is pretty 
undocumented, but trying on a gnome installation it seems that its 
fileformat is only a newline separated list of items in the current 
directory that shouldn't be displayed. for example:
Mail
Desktop
foo.txt
would hyde Mail and Desktop directories and the foo.txt file
