A couple of notes:

0. This is a good idea because the shortcut key was not discoverable (people
    don't read notices).

1. instead of a narrow bar, simply use a button. IT takes less space and is
    just as discoverable, provided...

2. ...provided you make it FLASH for a few seconds when it
    appears. So it becomes even more apparent than the current bar. Flashing
    is more important than size.
