Partially agree with you: / search is for different users than Find icon
search. But improvements in current handling of / search would be
welcome: possibility to edit searched string and switch case
sensitivity, maybe use of RE. Case sensitivity could be handled with
special atom (like in Vim: \c) - this feature is for power users which
can use such things. Not anything have to be dumbed down.

Definitely these two (/ and Find) shouldn't be merged.

Also I think this special status bar should be at bottom:
