What do you think about Macosx AquaHIGuidelines ( http://developer.apple.com/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/OSXHIGuidelines/index.html  also in pdf). 
There is nice part about menus. Edit for example.

"The Edit menu provides commands that allow people to change (edit) the contents
of documents and other text containers, such as fields. It also provides the
commands that allow people to share data, within and between applications, via the
Clipboard."

No mention of Edit / Create new.
