If you install Linux (or get it preinstalled or use a live cd), you get
a lot of applications installed. Normally, you can hardly conclude from
the name what the application does for you. The menu only gives limited
hints.
Furthermore, many applications start with no document at all or with one
that gives little hints. Some start with a wizzard, some with a config
dialog.
I assume (and know from many tests) that people will not use programs
because they cannot easily figure out what it does.
Suggestion:
When the application starts for the first time, show some kind of popup
that gives basic information about what the program does. For example:
"This is mindmapping tool that helps you organising and visualising your
ideas or argumentations". Many rpms provide this information anyway.
This inial popup has the unchecked checkbox "show at program start".
Comments?
