Also I agree that just underlining the focused text is a bit odd and, maybe, a 
"highlight on focus" type of behaviour (extend q/kbutton) would be more 
desirable.

does it have to? imo it's like a full screen app (since @ logout all screen 
becomes "grayed out") and it's colours/brightness/higher constrast should be 
enough to draw attention.

usability-wise, it still comes to clicking buttons to perform an action, but 
arguably horizontal layouts are supposed to be more intuitive than vertical 
ones...
