i don't fully recognize the problem with the stop- / refresh-button. 
which usability problem would be solved by removing one button or adding some 
"fade-in" or "fade-out" - effect? this would make usability even worse: one 
GUI-element would behave differently depending on the current situation 
(loading a page / not loading a page). it's like having the "save" button 
save a document but also deleting it... 


this "flexible" button would be somewhat "modal" too and "modes" often cause 
errors - you have to realize in which "mode" you currently are and then make 
the right descision. "vi" is one exmaple of (bad) usage of modes...


just my 0,02 ¤... ;-)
