I think the reason why Microsoft went that route, and why double-clicking came 
in, was that in single-click mode, if you clicked on anything (perhaps by 
accident) something was bound to happen. Selection though single-clicking 
could have unwanted side-effects in some cases, and double-clicking prevents 
that.

Yes I have, and some of them use computers for a living. What's worse is that 
after years of usage, the vast majority have no idea that they are actually 
doing it.

I would agree with that, and it sounds positive. There are some places where 
it makes sense, and others less so. At least people should be able to try it 
out and see how it goes.
