Hi,

I'd say that if you enable this option, all kde
applications should go to the system tray regardless
of whether there are open windows or not. I'd be in
favour of not changing taskbar functionality.

People can then add a different applet to the panel
that would integrate the system tray, task bar and
application buttons into one collection of icons.

I guess the main reason is to significantly reduce the
time required to load programs when constantly
switching from task to task. It is a real pain to
constantly have to remember to keep one openoffice
window open. How many inexperienced computer users
would accidentally close all of the windows of
openoffice then realise they have to wait ages for it
to start again?

Apple is very careful with their user interface
designs, and I think that the fact that their
operating systems behave this way is one of the
reasons that people are satisfied with the speed of
their macs for longer than pcs.

Many programs on macs aren't designed to work this
way. For example: real player. It doesn't seem to be a
huge problem because people quickly learn which
applications do and do not keep running after all of
their windows have been closed.

APIs in OpenOffice 2.0 are being carefully designed
for this to work as it is required for a native OS X
version. Also, look at mozilla - it has distinct close
and quit entries in the file menu.

People learn to close applications when their computer
slows down due to having too many applications open.
This isn't usually needed as people generally quit the
applications they have finished using.

Please don't dismiss this idea quickly. Ask any OS X
user- they love it.

cheers,
Rob
