I have been working on a general re-design of KControl. I'm a designer, not
a programmer, so there are only UI files and screenshots.
Please give feedback, positive and negative. Feedback is welcome in this
thread or by e-mailing to jamethknorth@hotmail.com
The design ideas are posted at:
http://www.csis.gvsu.edu/~abreschm/designs/the-control-panel/index.html
None are included with this e-mail because I have done designs/redesigns for
about 40 modules. Many are new modules, many are slightly-modified old
modules.
The primary issues I have been paying attention to are: Power,
Accessibility, Usability, Extensibility, Modularity, and Possibilty.
Power = Having options for everything in the control center.
Accessibility = Useable by everyone (all designs fit inside of 520x420 with
a 12pt font currently).
Usability = Logical layout and appropriate options and option naming.
Extensibility = The layout allows for more modules to be added.
Modularity = Modules are not strongly co-dependent.
Possibility = Everything is possible and reasonable to achieve.
Again, please give feedback, positive and negative. Feedback is welcome in
this thread or by e-mailing to jamethknorth@hotmail.com
I think that the changes to Themes and File Associations are very important,
so please look at those ones in particular.
In addition to the modules, I have been re-laying-out the module positions
in the tree. This isn't noted anywhere on the page, but the structure of the
menu on the left-hand-side of the page is my current idea for a control
panel layout. The layout idea with not-yet-designed modules included can be
found at:
http://www.csis.gvsu.edu/~abreschm/designs/the-control-panel/sources/checklist.html
Also, the designs call for an alteration to the way the Control Center is
structured. This isn't heavily noted on the page, as my plan on that is too
vague still.
In short, however, module layout is in a tree, where the tree nodes can
either be tabs or parallel to one another. This is important because several
of the module suggestions should be displayed as separate tabs in one module
(Themes), but also need to be able to be displayed separately.
The design further calls for the control-center layout to be easily
modifiable through a control module (not yet finished with design). With a
more easily modifiable control center, areas can be locked or unlocked by
the administrator (one of the module designs notes some issues in regard to
that).
