Eep, no, that is even worse than defaulting a multi line edit to do strange
things on enter. Now you even have to keep in mind which protocol you happen
to use for a given message, to figure out how to send it. This is the last
thing the users need. Unless of course you want to change all other protocols
to use single line input wigets so it is visually different, but i have a
feeling that won't be popular.
I still think the best solution is to default to ctrl-enter for multiline
edits, and enter for single line edits, and then add a checkbox in its
settings dialog to let you choose. (or add one of those thingies that lets
you choose a shortcut if they want something else)
As for the suggestions about asking about it in a first time wizard. I really
think the only thing it should ask about in a potential first time wizard is
to guide you to set up an account. I generally dispise first time wizards,
but i think they make sense in programs where you HAVE to set it up before
you can use it. And i think that when they are used they should ONLY ask the
users for information strictly needed for it to operate, as i believe that
the user should only be bothered with really important decisions, unless he
himselfs goes looking for options. (This is why i hate kpersonalizer too, i
think the only important question it asks is for the user to pick a locale
and a language, and the rest of the questions is it being obnoxious and
asking things that really just should have sane defaults)
