I compiled FreeType from source, and it now renders TrueType fonts correctly.  
Sort of.  Problem is it lists two fonts, say Times New Roman and Times New 
Roman [Monotype].  The Monotype one gives the correct result, but it is only 
kept until the current progrram ends.  The next time any program is started, 
it defaults the regular Times New Roman.

This only occurs when AA is on. That's OK, though.  I can just turn of AA - 
good fonts don't need it anyway, apparently.
