The rule so far is that KDE as a whole should work with 800x600 and that
individual windows should not exceed 640x480.
The X-server supports panning, maybe that can be useful if you want to use
larger pixels and still use a desktop designed for a greater number of
pixels. Not sure if that can be used in KDE as-is, or whether that would
require support from kwin. Lubos will know :-)
