This still uses a left pane for choosing the module, and a right hand side 
which displays the module. I think what people meant is to get rid of the 
left pane and show the icons in the main window, and either open modules in 
new windows, or make them replace the icons.

That said, i actually like this view too as i find it works just like the 
tree view, but without the tendency to be too big to fit on the screen 
without scrollbars. (happens a lot to me in the tree view as i tend to only 
open the lists, not close them again :-) Perhaps it should be default in 
3.2, in case others are having the same problem, and then get confused by 
the long list? It is a quite small change, that might be a bit easier on 
newbies(?)
