What I like to say is that there *is* some relation between hyperlinks and
local files and that because of this some consistency in showing them should
exist.

Why? The task bar destroy this problem for 99,9% by showing the windows of all
desktops: it isn't harder to use with 1,2,3,4 or even 5,000,000 virtual
desktops.

But the avarage user will like default 4 virutal desktops. Maybe their are
situations where people only need 2 desktops but we shouldn't change the
default settings for this group by making it harder for most people. If some
distributions have a target market which needs only 2 virtual desktops then
they can change it by themself.

I know what you say but it isn't true in this situation. What is harder to
understand if you explain people the function of the 4 virtual desktops or
when you explain it for 2 desktops? I think that 99,999% of the people will
understand the function of 4 virual desktops as good as the function of only
2 virual desktops.

It's also static because not much change in it.

And I see the pager as a separator because it contrasts with the other items
in kicker what makes it good vissible.

clock: time and date change.
systray: systray icons apear and dissapear when the user start/stop
applications. You also have some applications which displays dynamic
information in their systray icon (e.g. Psi which displays a notification
when you receive a message).
