When desktop would get combined with $HOME it's first necessary to ensure
that all files currently in $HOME get moved into self-explanatory sub folders
eg. "My Settings". Even with "show hidden files" turned on there shouldn't be
a mess on the desktop (which could make files unreachable in the worst case).

...

Uhm, so $HOME shouldn't get combined with desktop but instead become a
subfolder of desktop, replacing the "Home" alias which currently resides on many
desktops and makes for a funny infinite loop mentioned on the bug page:
"It is also logically insane that the desktop contains the home dir and the
home dir contains the desktop. Insane! After all these years of using the
desktop metaphor, I just noticed!"
