hrm.. the people on kde-devel have noted some very strong points against this. 
especially since it would mean having icons for EVERYTHING in your ~/ on your 
desktop.

look them up, how? in the file manager, which defaults to $HOME? or by a file 
dialog which also defaults to $HOME?

the only place i can see it being easier is if you launch it from the desktop 
itself at the cost of having all your other files/directories listed there as 
well. and seeing as how many people don't use their desktop for such things 
(even less these days than they used to) because it's so cumbursome and since 
you can change this yourself if you wish, i don't see any benefits to it.

if we want to look at other vendor's efforts, we may notice that they too 
seperate Desktop and Home (or My Documents, or whatever) and that the 
emphasis on desktop icons is diminishing rapidly.
