I think one advantage apple had was their menu was less cluttered
and was text based not icon based so the single icon on the left stood
out. On KDE it one of a dozen icons. 

Also all the other icons launch something on a single click so that 
make users afraid to browse. On apple no single click on the menu launched 
anything so browsing the contents was easy. On windows where the they
did have icons that launched on single clicking there were obviously
different that the start menu. The panel can be configured for tiles
or a couple of other ways to distiguish it but i think we need something
better.

So I completely disagree with the statement that she would have had the
same trouble on other machines. This sounds like the programmers mentality 
of I know better than the users.
