yes, the digital numbers make for a great hint for the user. it also keeps it 
visually distinct from other items on the panel (e.g. it stands out more 
clearly as a seperate item)

there is an option to use the "plain colours" on the digital clock which, it 
seems, means that if ollows your colour scheme. but you are right that black 
and grey don't clash with much ;-)
