the individual layouts need work. e.g. the single colour mode has that one 
lonely colour setting. it looks sort of out of place ;-)

i'm still concerned about multiple widgets that control the same setting (e.g. 
colours) ... at least now they aren't all visible at the same time. it would 
be nice if they remained in the same general position however, since that 
would help people learn what they do... maybe..

i couldn't really test too much since the resulting binary likes to segfault 
on me :-/

but it is deffinitely another option... we need to get some users in front of 
the current dialog, your new design and the reinterp of SadEagle's layout 
that i've done and see exactly how people interact with it... i could 
probably do this with a small handful of average users... can anyone else 
throw a few people at this and observe how they use the variations?
