I noticed that strigi is not working:
Failed to contact Strigi indexer (No such method 'currentFolder' in interface \
'org.kde.nepomuk.Strigi' at object path '/nepomukstrigiservice' (signature ''))

I wonder what that is.

What I did is to set the background colour in System \
Settings/Look&Feel/Colours/Colours Tab/View Background and it is taken over by kmail, \
with the exception of html emails that specify a background colour.

That did the trick, thanks very much.

Not sure, I just enabled Strigi/Nepomuk and its seem to be indexing my home
folder OK. Lets see what other's find.

Cheers

a couple of observations since it's getting real late where I am:

after logging out and back in, my screen dimmed 50% - it took some fiddling
around and it turned out to be in kpowersave where I had to drag the
brightness down from 100% and back up again - that seemed to reset things and
all is well

Kmail is really not to my liking now; they've introduced this grouping feature
in the message list which I really don't want and can't seem to turn off, or at
least I haven't found the way how, and they've compounded the problem by
taking two lines to list every message now in the message list, with the
subject on the first line and the sender and other stuff on the next - I find it
really irritating that my quick scan of the message list only sees half as
much as I used to, and actually even less because of the space taken up by the
grouping feature - hopefully, these things are all configurable

otherwise, the update was painless, and other stuff stands up well on first
glance

I knew I should have waited. It's all configurable with the little buttons on
the right just above the message list - options are good, the new features
will be welcomed by some, and I get to keep the expansive view I have come to
prefer...
